I (re)watched Avatar, so you don’t have to
The World of Avatar arrives at Disney’s World Animal Kingdom on May 27, 2017.
Raise your hand if you are excited.
Now, raise your hand if you remember the Avatar movie.
Considering it has been almost eight years since Avatar debuted in theaters, it is no surprise that most people have forgotten all about the film.
Currently, the only one way to see Avatar is to catch it on tv or buy it on Amazon. Here is a link if you want to watch it yourself. I will receive a small commission from your purchase.
You can just keep reading for a World of Avatar refresher. That’s right. I rewatched the movie, so you don’t have to.
Avatar – The Movie
Avatar takes place in the mid-22nd century on Pandora – the moon of a planet in the Alpha Centauri star system. Pandora is rich with the room temperature superconductor mineral unobtanium.
Na’vi are the indigenous people of Pandora. They are 10-feet-tall, blue, human-ish and have a deep connection with nature. The Na’vi fly around on big winged predators called banshee. It is a rite-of-passage for the Na’vi to bond with a banshee.
Humans have depleted Earth’s natural resources, and now the Resource Development Association (RDA) is colonizing Pandora to mine for unobtanium. The air on Pandora is poisonous to humans, so scientists use Avatars to explore the planet and interact with the Na’vi. The scientist lies down in a pod, and their mind links to their genetically matched Avatar – a Na’vi-human hybrid body.
Predictably, the sacred Na’vi Hometree sits atop the largest store of unobtanium. The RDA uses military force to attack the Na’vi and destroy the Hometree to get the precious mineral. The Na’vi ban together with the animals of Pandora to overrun the RDA and send them back to earth. Only a small number of the human scientists are allowed to stay on the planet.
Avatar is also the story of a paraplegic marine that takes over his twin’s Avatar after his brother dies. He falls in love with Pandora as well as a Na’vi woman. At the end of the movie, his mind is transferred permanently into his Avatar.
The World of Avatar at Disney World Animal Kingdom
Alpha Centauri Expeditions (ACE) has teamed up with Disney World to lead travel adventures from Disney’s Animal Kingdom to Pandora. Expeditions begin on May 27, 2017, and you should expect to experience the following during your adventure.
Avatar Flight of Passage
Climb on a mountain banshee and soar over ancient stone arches and under the floating mountains of Pandora. This expedition is a FastPass+ attraction, and guests must be 44″ or taller to ride a banshee.
Na’vi River Journey
Board a reed boat and travel down the Kaspavan river into the deepest parts of the Pandora rainforest where you will see glowing plants and native animals. Listen close to hear the Na’vi Shaman of Songs sing about the bond we all have with nature. The Na’vi River Journey is appropriate for guests of all ages.
Take a break from exploring to enjoy “bioluminescent” cocktails, indigenous beers, and sweet snacks
Na’vi art and cultural items fill this quick service dining hall. Food specialties include the Boba Ball and something called a Cheeseburger Pod. (If I knew what those were, I would explain it to you.)
