I love the feel of Disney Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. I’ve stayed in a camper (never again) and one of the cabins (loved it), and I am always amazed at all the recreational activities available.

- Bus transportation takes guests from Fort Wilderness to Epcot, Disney Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, and Disney Springs.
- The Magic Kingdom is accessible only by boat.
- Fort Wilderness is home to the premium dining Hoop-de-Doo Revue dinner show and Mickey’s Backyard BBQ.
- Trail’s End table service restaurant serves a buffet breakfast and dinner.
- Counter service meals are available at P & J’s Southern Takeout and the snack bar at the Meadows Swimmin’ Pool
- Fort Wilderness has two gift shops: The Settlement Trading Post has traditional gift shop items, and The Meadows Trading Post carries an extended selection of grocery items.
- The Waggin’ Tails Dog Park is near Loop 300.
- There are arcades at Pioneer Hall and the Meadow Recreation Area

Looking for a campground near Disney World? How about one with all the perks of a Disney Resort Hotel. Fort Wilderness Campground is the least expensive accommodations on Disney property. Bring camping equipment or rent a camper from a camper rental company.
Disney Fort Wilderness Campground has four different types of campsites. Tent or Pop-Up Campsites have a 10′ by 25′ concrete pad and accommodate either two tents or a pop-up or van-type camper. Full Hook-Up Campsites have a 10′ by 50′ concrete pad and room for an RV plus a tent. Preferred Campsites accommodate an RV and tent on a 10′ by 45′ concrete pad. Premium campsites accommodate large RVs on an 18′ by 60′ pad. Pets are allowed at all campsites except Tent/Pop-Up sites.
All campsites have charcoal grills, free wi-fi, a picnic table, television and electrical hookups, and a cold water tap. Except for the Tent/Pop-Up sites, they also have sewer hookup and allow pets.
Clean, air-conditioned comfort stations are scattered through the campgrounds. The shower areas include a small changing area with a bench.
A limited selection of grocery items may be purchased at the Meadows Outpost.
An internal bus system takes guests from their campsites to recreational areas and other amenities, but golf cart rentals are also available.

If you aren’t interested in roughing it, consider a stay in a Fort Wilderness Cabins. They have everything I require for camping – indoor plumbing, air conditioning, and a real bed. The cabins are one of the few accommodations in Disney World that sleep 5- or 6-person families (and your dog). The bedroom has a queen bed plus twin bunk beds, and the living room has a double-size sofa bed. The cabins have one bathroom and a small kitchen if you want to cook on your vacation.

Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground has the best outdoor recreational activities on Disney property. Plan to take a day or two away from the parks just to enjoy everything Fort Wilderness has to offer. And the best part is that you do not have to be a guest of Fort Wilderness to enjoy most of the activities (pools excluded.)

The Meadows Swimmin’ Pool and has a water slide as well as a sprinkler playground and is located near at the Meadows Recreation area. The quieter Wilderness Swimmin’ Pool is located near Loop 2500. Towels are not provided at either location.

Visit the horses at the Tri-Circle-D Ranch stables near Pioneer Hall. The impressive thoroughbreds work at the Magic Kingdom pulling the trolleys and carrying the Headless Horseman in the Boo to You Halloween parade.

For a small fee, children age 2 and older that are under 80 pounds and 48 inches tall can go on a parent-led pony ride. Pony rides are offered daily at Tri-Circle-D Ranch from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and do not require a reservation.

Guests age 9 and up can ride horses at the Tri-Circle-D Ranch in Disney’s Fort Wilderness (for a fee.) Reservations are recommended for the 45-minute trail ride offered several times each day. My daughter loved having the opportunity to ride a horse for the first time, and we loved that we could send her off on the adventure without us.

If you visit Disney World over the holidays, I recommend taking a horse-drawn carriage ride through Fort Wilderness. Guests go all-out decorating their campsites with holiday lights and inflatable decorations. Carriage rides for up to four adults are available by reservation and wagon rides are available daily on a first-come, first-served basis. Carriage and wagon rides depart from Pioneer Hall.

My husband and son have enjoyed fishing at Fort Wilderness on several Disney trips. Fishing is no longer permitted on the banks (as pictured), but you can fish off a dock at the Meadows Recreation Area. On a recent visit, I saw a kid catch a foot long bass! (I think, I honestly don’t know what type of fish it was.) Rent fishing equipment at the Bike Barn.

Motorized boats that accommodate from two to ten people at the Fort Wilderness Marina. Boats are rented per half-hour on a first-come, first-served basis. All passengers are required to wear life jackets.
Rent a bike to ride along the trails or to make it easier to get from your campsite to the Fort Wilderness amenities. Bikes are available at the Bike Barn at the Meadow Recreation Area.
chip ‘n dale campfire sing-a-long and campground cinema
Join Chip ‘n Dale nightly for ‘smores around the campfire followed by a Disney movie. ‘Smores kits are available from the Chuckwagon Snack Bar.

Yep! You can even channel your inner Merida and learn how to use a bow and arrows at Disney World. Guests age seven and older learn archery in a 90-min class. The archery range is near the Meadows Outpost Bike Barn and reservations are strongly recommended.
wilderness back trail adventure
Climb aboard a Segway on a guided tour around Fort Wilderness, Wilderness Lodge, and Bay Lake. Tours are scheduled twice a day and depart from the Bike Barn near the Meadows Outpost. Reservations are recommended.

Fort Wilderness has a small beach area near the marina where guests can sunbathe, play in the sand, and watch the Electrical Water Pageant each evening.
